Duke vs Bluecrop: The Early One vs The Standard

Duke blueberry bush laden with clusters of ripe light-blue berries in a sunny garden

Duke and Bluecrop are the two northern bushes nurseries sell most, and they are complements, not rivals. Duke ripens early — your first berries of the year — and blooms late for an early variety, dodging frosts that catch other early bloomers. Bluecrop ripens mid-season with the heaviest, most reliable crops in the class and unusual drought tolerance once established.

Flavor differs subtly: Duke is sweet-tangy and crisp; Bluecrop is the mild, classic all-rounder that freezes and bakes perfectly. Planted together (the most common two-bush start in the North) they cross-pollinate, and your harvest stretches from Duke's first pickings through Bluecrop's peak. Add Elliott later and you have the full-season trio our shop leads with.
